The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a strong warning to international airlines following a rise in complaints from Nigerian passengers who are being deported after being transported halfway to their destinations. This practice, which has led to significant distress for affected travelers, has also raised concerns over the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

In a statement released on Thursday, Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs at the NCAA, condemned the actions of airlines that refuse boarding or deny entry to passengers at transit points due to visa or travel restrictions. Achimugu emphasized that such actions are “completely unacceptable” and have damaged the reputation of Nigerian air travel.

“These actions, where passengers are denied entry or returned to Nigeria only upon arrival at transit stops, cause significant inconvenience and distress,” said Achimugu. “Airlines must inform passengers of any potential obstacles to entry before their journey begins.”

The NCAA reiterated the responsibilities of airlines under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), which require airlines to properly screen passengers and ensure they have the correct travel documents and visas before departure. Achimugu stressed that passengers should not be subjected to the humiliation of being sent back after boarding.

In response to these ongoing issues, the NCAA has announced immediate enforcement measures. “Effective immediately, any airline found guilty of such practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties as deemed necessary,” warned Achimugu.

The NCAA also called for full cooperation from all airlines to maintain the integrity of the aviation industry and protect the welfare of Nigerian passengers. The warning comes as part of the NCAA’s commitment to ensuring a smooth, professional travel experience for all passengers flying from Nigeria.
