The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the recent massacre in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, which left at least 52 residents dead. The horrific incident has once again brought attention to the ongoing violence plaguing Northern Nigeria, with innocent lives continuing to be lost at an alarming rate.
In a powerful statement released on Sunday, Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman of Northern CAN, described the killings as “barbaric,” “tragic,” and “utterly unacceptable.” He expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, and to all affected residents.
“We are appalled by this senseless bloodshed,” said Hayab. “This latest act of violence is yet another heartbreaking reminder of the recurring crisis in our communities, which continues to tear apart families and destroy lives.” Hayab emphasized that the culture of violence, disguised under religious, ethnic, or other false justifications, must come to an end.
The statement further stressed the critical importance of restoring the value of human life in Nigerian society, calling for an end to the ongoing cycle of killings that have plagued various parts of the country. “This bloodletting must stop,” Hayab declared. “We urge security agencies to intensify efforts to arrest the perpetrators and ensure they face justice. We cannot allow this cycle of violence to continue without consequences.”
Northern CAN also called on all Nigerians, including religious, traditional, and community leaders, to speak out for peace, unity, and tolerance. “The wanton killings must not become the new normal,” the statement urged. “We must rise together and say, ‘Enough is enough.’”
While acknowledging the swift response of the Plateau State Government and the reported arrests of suspects, the association urged the government to remain committed to maintaining peace and security. It also appealed to citizens to cooperate with security forces by reporting suspicious activities, helping to prevent future violence.
The statement concluded with a heartfelt prayer: “May the souls of the departed rest in peace. We pray for comfort and healing for the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragedy.”
