The United Action Front of the Civil Society (UAFCS) has strongly condemned the recent invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by armed security personnel, labeling the act a severe assault on Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued by Chairman Olawale Okunniyi, the group criticized the presence of state security agents within the legislative chambers, describing it as a “barbaric” breach that undermines the democratic process.
“It is unacceptable for security operatives to interfere with the operations of any government institution, especially the parliament, under any circumstances,” the statement read.
The UAFCS has called for the immediate removal of Department of State Services (DSS) operatives from the premises and urged security agencies to respect democratic norms. They also warned against the return of authoritarian tactics similar to the dark days of former military ruler Sani Abacha.
Civil society organizations are now raising alarms about the potential weakening of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
