Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has called for a reduction in the proposed suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from six months to three, urging his colleagues to show leniency.
During Thursday’s plenary, Moro acknowledged that Akpoti-Uduaghan had breached Senate rules but appealed for a fairer punishment. His plea followed recommendations from the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, Senator Neda Imasuen, who proposed a six-month suspension over her allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Imasuen dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims that Akpabio was suppressing her voice in the Senate, labeling the accusations as “frivolous.”
Key Recommendations from the Senate Committee:
Six-month suspension from all legislative activities starting March 6, 2025.
Forfeiture of all Senate properties in her possession.
Ban from the legislative chamber for the duration of the suspension.
The controversy stems from last Thursday’s dramatic session, where Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived to find her seat reassigned and her nameplate removed. The move, ordered by Akpabio, sparked a heated protest, with the Kogi senator demanding answers over what she viewed as political intimidation.
