Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would not remain in office beyond four years if elected President of Nigeria.

Obi made the statement during an interview with News Central TV scheduled to air on Thursday evening.

In a video snippet from the interview, the former Anambra State governor insisted that he only wants to serve one term to stabilise the country.

“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day longer than four years, even with a gun to my head,” Obi said.

During the interview with Kayode Akintemi, Obi also criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over insecurity, borrowing and food policies.

He accused the Federal Government of worsening economic hardship and insecurity across the country within two years.

According to Obi, Nigeria has become poorer under the current administration.

“It’s only two years that someone used to borrow more than all previous governments put together,” he said.

Obi also condemned the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity, citing killings in parts of Plateau, Niger and Benue states.

“A president can stay in Abuja while hundreds of people die in Jos, Niger or Benue,” he added.

The former governor further criticised the government’s agricultural policies, claiming food importation destroyed local farming businesses.

He argued that the government failed to properly support Nigerian farmers during periods of crisis.

Reacting to Obi’s comments, the Presidency dismissed his one-term promise and questioned his credibility.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Obi’s political history showed he could not be trusted.

“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga wrote on X.

The presidential aide accused Obi of abandoning political parties and breaking past political commitments.

According to him, Obi once pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance while serving as governor of Anambra State before later joining the Peoples Democratic Party.

Onanuga described Obi as a “political rolling stone,” claiming his political promises were often short-lived.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted,” he stated.

The exchange comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify across the country.
