Suspected bandits have abducted the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Umar Bungudu, after attacking his residence and killing four security personnel attached to him.
The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday night in the Zango area of Bungudu town, where the assailants overpowered security personnel guarding the chairman’s residence. Two police officers and two vigilantes were reportedly killed during the attack.
According to reports, the attackers initially abducted the council chairman, his wife and their children. Security operatives who pursued the assailants later rescued some of the children, while the chairman remained in captivity. The status of his wife could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing the reports.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers were heavily armed and overwhelmed the security personnel at the residence.
“The bandits came into the town determined to carry out their mission. The chairman’s security team resisted, but they were outgunned,” the resident was quoted as saying.
The resident also said reinforcement teams arrived after the attackers had fled the area. He called for stronger security measures to protect communities affected by recurring attacks.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Zamfara State Police Command were reportedly unsuccessful at the time of filing.
The incident adds to security concerns in Bungudu and other parts of Zamfara State, where communities have continued to face attacks by armed groups.
