A devastating fire broke out at Jarma UK Academy in Sokoto, severely damaging its offices and hostels. The blaze struck the school, which serves as a refuge for orphaned students displaced by Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe States.
The fire impacted several vital areas of the academy, including the students’ hostels, the Principal’s and Vice Principal’s offices, a computer lab, and a staff room, leaving clothing, mattresses, blankets, and other student belongings destroyed. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown.
In response, a Sokoto state delegation, led by Secretary to the State Government Muhammad Bello Sifawa, visited the scene, alongside Chief of Staff Aminu Haliru Dikko and State Attorney-General Nasiru Mohammed Binji. They assessed the damage and expressed condolences to the school management, thanking Allah that no lives were lost and no students were injured.
Established in 2018 by philanthropist Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo, Jarma UK Academy is home to 176 students, many of whom are orphans who have survived the horrors of Boko Haram’s insurgency. The school provides both Western and Islamic education, along with entrepreneurial skills, to help its students build better futures.
The state government has pledged support to the academy during this difficult time.
