The tragic news surrounding the sudden death of former national and West African light heavyweight champion Segun ‘Success’ Olarewaju has taken a somber turn. An autopsy report released today confirmed that the 29-year-old pugilist died of cardiac arrest.
Olarewaju collapsed during a bout against a Ghanaian boxer in Accra on March 29, and despite immediate medical attention, he was unable to recover. The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), Remi Aboderin, confirmed the cause of death, stating, “The report of the Post Mortem says it’s Cardiac Arrest.”
Aboderin, who also serves as the President of the West African Boxing Union, further clarified that the body would not be released for repatriation immediately, as additional tests are needed to examine the heart. The process could take up to two weeks.
In response to Olarewaju’s untimely passing, the NBB of C has declared a halt to all professional boxing activities in Nigeria as a mark of respect. The body’s statement, issued by the organization’s scribe, Olu Aboderin, read: “In Segun’s honor and to show how shattered and devastated we are at his loss, the Board has declared a cessation of all pro boxing activities in Nigeria.”
The boxing community is mourning the loss of a promising athlete who was well-respected across West Africa.
