Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the killing of a teacher abducted during a school attack in Oyo State.
Obi described the incident as a painful sign that Nigeria is gradually losing its humanity. He said the country must act quickly to stop rising violence and insecurity.
The attack happened in the Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Armed bandits stormed several schools and kidnapped teachers, pupils, and students.
Reacting in a post on his X account, Obi said the killing of the teacher was shocking and heartbreaking.
According to him, Nigerians are becoming too comfortable with violence and bloodshed.
He warned that repeated attacks on innocent people show a deeper moral problem in society.
“These tragedies are no longer isolated incidents,” Obi said.
“They show a dangerous level of moral and social decay in the country.”
The former Anambra State governor said teachers should never become victims of violence because they play a major role in shaping the future of society.
He added that the country must stop treating killings and kidnappings as normal events.
Obi also called on the government and security agencies to ensure accountability and improve protection for schools and communities.
He sympathised with the affected families and prayed for the safe return of the remaining abducted victims.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, earlier confirmed that seven teachers and several pupils were kidnapped during the attack.
Makinde also revealed that one of the abducted teachers, believed to be a Mathematics teacher, was killed by the gunmen.
The governor promised that the state government would continue working to rescue the remaining victims.
He said Oyo State would not surrender to terror or intimidation.
Meanwhile, teachers in Ogbomoso staged a peaceful protest over the incident.
The protesters demanded stronger security around schools and safer learning environments for teachers and students.
President Bola Tinubu also condemned the killing.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President assured Nigerians that security agencies were making efforts to rescue the abducted victims.
Tinubu said police tactical teams and intelligence units had already been deployed to track down the kidnappers.
The latest attack has again raised concerns about insecurity and school kidnappings in different parts of Nigeria.
