A teacher abducted during an attack on a secondary school in Oyo State has reportedly been killed by his captors, intensifying concerns over insecurity and the safety of other victims still in captivity.
The victim, identified as Michael Oyedokun, was among several teachers, students and the school principal kidnapped when armed men invaded Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, in Oriire Local Government Area on Friday, May 15.
According to reports, a video allegedly released by the kidnappers on Sunday showed the teacher being killed while in captivity. The footage, which circulated on social media on Monday, has sparked fear and outrage within the affected community and beyond.
The Oyo State Government confirmed the development on Monday through the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Suleimon Olanrewaju. He said the governor had expressed condolences to the family of the deceased teacher while assuring residents that efforts were ongoing to rescue the remaining victims.
“What we know right now is that seven teachers in all were abducted. And, unfortunately, we got a video this morning that one of the teachers, I understand, the mathematics teacher, was killed by the terrorists,” Olanrewaju said.
He added that security agencies had arrested several suspects in connection with the attack. According to him, six persons believed to be informants or logistics suppliers to the kidnappers were apprehended within the community, while another three suspects were arrested by a separate security outfit operating in the state.
Olanrewaju also disclosed that some security personnel involved in rescue operations, including soldiers, members of the Amotekun Corps and local vigilantes, were killed after encountering explosives allegedly planted by the abductors. He noted that injured operatives were receiving medical treatment.
Residents, relatives of the abducted victims and community leaders have continued to call on security agencies and the state government to intensify rescue efforts to prevent further loss of life. The incident has further heightened anxiety over rising cases of kidnapping and violent attacks in parts of Oyo State.
