Two personnel of the Nigerian Army have been arrested by military police for allegedly providing unauthorised security and escort services to celebrities at the wedding of popular content creators Peller and Jarvis.
The soldiers were identified as Private Onasanya Ifeoluwa and Private Ukpai Onyinyechi. Both are attached to the 81 Division Medical Services and Hospital in Obalende, Lagos. They were detained over alleged unlawful conduct and illegal deployment at the event, which took place in Lagos on July 31.
The high-profile ceremony attracted several celebrities and generated significant attention online. A video that circulated widely showed a soldier acting as a bodyguard for content creator and hypewoman Ivanna. The footage drew public criticism, with many observers stating that the incident damaged the image of the Nigerian Army.
The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by the military to address cases of misconduct among its personnel. In a recent related case, a soldier was arrested after appearing in uniform during a TikTok live broadcast in which he solicited funds.
According to SaharaReporters, the latest development has renewed concerns about the welfare of military personnel. Some soldiers have previously used social media platforms to highlight grievances over pay and working conditions. The report noted that although President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 24,000 additional soldiers and an 80 per cent salary increase for troops, questions persist about whether these measures will effectively reduce instances of unauthorised deployments and other actions that could harm the military’s reputation.
