Over 400 Golfers Storm Abuja for Nigeria @ 65 Independence Tournament

Abuja — More than 400 golfers have converged on the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club in Abuja for the Nigeria @ 65 Golf Tournament, a week-long event marking the country’s 65th Independence anniversary.

The tournament tees off on September 27 and runs through October 1, with participants drawn from across the country and beyond. Organisers said the event is not only a showcase of sporting excellence but also a tribute to the unity and resilience of Nigeria at 65.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. James Agbonhese, described the competition as a symbol of national pride.

“This is more than a sporting competition. It reflects our values of unity, perseverance, discipline, and excellence,” he said.

In addition to the games, several new facilities will be commissioned at the resort, including a modern practice range, a midway hut, a back-nine starter’s shed, and a golf cart bay.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, is serving as Grand Patron of the tournament, while top military and civilian dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion.

Notably, more than 100 female golfers, including three professionals, are competing this year — underscoring the sport’s growing popularity among women in Nigeria.
