Tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Friday after a faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced the dissolution of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) headed by former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara. The faction accused the Wabara-led board of losing credibility and failing to provide moral leadership.

The development followed the inauguration of a new BoT conducted by the faction’s Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad, during a meeting hosted by Wike at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja.

In his remarks before the meeting went into closed session, Muhammad said the decision was aimed at restoring discipline, constitutional order and ethical leadership in the party, which he alleged had been compromised under the previous structure. He explained that the newly constituted BoT would be formally presented at the end of deliberations.

Muhammad argued that the former BoT leadership had lost the trust of party members, noting that Wabara’s suspension by the Abia State chapter over alleged anti-party activities made it inappropriate for him to continue as chairman. According to him, the board, which should serve as the party’s moral compass, became divided and ineffective.

He also blamed the immediate past national leadership under Ambassador Umar Damagum for contributing to the PDP’s internal crisis, accusing him of shielding individuals who violated the party’s constitution and prioritising political convenience over due process.

“When a party abandons its own rules, it endangers its very foundation,” he said, adding that the PDP reached a breaking point because of disregard for its constitution and judicial authority.

Muhammad praised the efforts of members who sought legal intervention, saying the recent court ruling empowered the faction to reorganise the BoT. He insisted the judgment was not an attack on the party but a reminder that no institution is above the law.

He described the newly appointed BoT as a symbol of renewal, insisting that its members were selected for their integrity and commitment to fairness rather than factional loyalty. He urged them to serve as a unifying force and uphold the party’s values.

Reflecting on the party’s internal issues, Muhammad said the rot within the PDP began when it abandoned its zoning arrangement before the 2015 elections, allowing personal ambitions to override principles of equity and fairness. He pledged that the new leadership would rebuild the party on transparency, respect for court rulings and credible internal processes.

“The era of hiding behind ‘internal affairs’ to justify impunity is over,” he declared, stressing that party independence must operate within constitutional boundaries. He urged members to unite and work toward restoring the PDP as a credible platform for national leadership.
