The Innovator Founder Visa is now open to Nigerian and other international students in the UK. The UK government has introduced a major policy change that allows students to move directly from a student visa to the Innovator Founder visa without returning home. This new rule will officially come into effect on November 25, 2025.
Previously, students had to leave the UK before applying, causing additional stress and financial pressure. However, the updated policy removes this barrier and eases the transition process. As a result, more students can begin their business plans without experiencing unnecessary delays.
To be eligible, applicants must submit a business plan evaluated by an approved granting agency. The idea must be innovative, viable and scalable. Additionally, students must meet English language requirements and show proof of available funds. These conditions ensure that only serious and prepared contractors obtain approval.
The Innovator Founder visa offers up to three years of stay, with the option to extend and possibly settle if the business is successful. Additionally, the UK sees this policy as part of its 2025 Innovation Strategy, which aims to retain talented graduates. Since the removal of the old Start-up visa, this route is now the main route for student entrepreneurs.
For many Nigerian students, this change represents an important opportunity. This reduces travel costs, saves them time and allows them to immediately focus on building their business ideas. Ultimately, the updated Innovator Founder visa offers international students a smoother path to launching their business in the UK.
