A man with mental health issues allegedly seized an AK-47 rifle from a soldier at a military checkpoint in Lagos State and shot him dead. The tragic incident occurred in the Agbowa community, near the Ikorodu Highway. Eyewitnesses claim the man overpowered the soldier stationed at the Adeogun Bridge checkpoint, grabbed the weapon, and opened fire.
According to a police source, the attacker exhibited erratic behavior even before the confrontation. The source described the man as “demented,” stating that he managed to disarm the soldier and immediately shot him with the rifle. The soldier died instantly.
Attempts to contact the Lagos State Police Command for confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls to their spokesperson went unanswered. Meanwhile, the military has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The incident has sparked outrage and fear throughout the community, raising serious concerns about security at checkpoints and the assessment of individuals with mental health issues. Civilians in the vicinity reported being shocked by the violence and suddenness of the attack.
Security analysts argue that the tragedy underscores the need to strengthen the protection of soldiers and improve mental health interventions in public spaces. The indiscriminate presence of firearms and unchecked psychological instability pose a serious risk to both military personnel and civilians.
