A motorcycle theft operation was discovered in Makurdi on Friday after two suspected thieves were lynched by members of the Motorcyclists Association. The Chairman of the Makurdi Local Government Area Executive, the Honorable Joseph Keffi, visited the site to assess the situation and speak with residents.
The incident began when a commercial motorcyclist tracked his stolen motorcycle using a tracking device. The device led him to a residence on Tarzaan Iyortyer Street, off George Akume Avenue. He immediately alerted other motorcyclists, who stormed the building and reportedly found two suspects inside. The mob took the law into their own hands and killed both men before law enforcement could intervene.
According to a statement from the President’s Special Adviser on Security and Policy, the Honorable Beetseh Terhide Mark, officers from the police Division E launched an investigation at the building. They discovered more than 15 motorcycles and various dismantled parts hidden inside the residence. The findings suggest the location may have been a major motorcycle theft hub operating in Makurdi.
During his visit, the Honorable Keffi urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate closely with law enforcement. He expressed concern about the rising number of motorcycle thefts and reaffirmed the city council’s commitment to strengthening local security measures. He stated that combating crime requires unity, cooperation, and ongoing collaboration with law enforcement.
Reactions to the incident quickly spread on social media. A Facebook user, Joy Iorhuna, claimed that police recovered not only motorcycles but also household items such as grinders and sewing machines. She further alleged that over 2,000 motorcycles and various parts were recovered from the same location, though authorities have not confirmed this figure.
Residents expressed dismay at what many described as a hidden criminal network operating in the city center. They called for increased surveillance and a strengthened community policing program to prevent similar incidents.
Teran Nathaniel, press advisor to the chief executive, reiterated the municipal council’s commitment to supporting law enforcement. He indicated that the administration will continue working with law enforcement to identify and dismantle criminal operations throughout Makurdi.
