Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, says he would strongly advocate for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if the separatist leader demonstrates genuine remorse.
Gumi stated this on Tuesday during an interview on *The Morning Brief*, a Channels Television programme.
His remarks come a week after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, convicted Kanu on seven terrorism-related charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Following the judgment, Kanu was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Facility.
According to Gumi, despite Kanu’s past actions and threats against security personnel, he would champion calls for clemency if the IPOB leader embraces peace.
“If Nnamdi Kanu, who is in prison for terrorism and threatening to kill our soldiers, shows remorse and calls for peace, I will be at the forefront calling for his pardoning and amnesty,” he said.
