The federal government has renewed its commitment to combating insecurity at the national level, but also made a clear appeal for global support in its fight against terrorism. During a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), the Federation’s Government Secretary, George Akume, urged regional and international allies to strengthen cooperation to eradicate violent extremism.
Akume emphasized that while the government is taking strong measures to protect lives and property, the scale and complexity of the threats demand collective action. He stated that Nigeria must deepen partnerships with allies abroad to improve intelligence sharing, technological support, and strategic coordination against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements.
He argued that, in addition to military operations and internal security reforms, external assistance could help Nigeria combat cross-border terrorism, arms smuggling, and the networks that support insurgent groups. According to him, “we need the support of our allies to be able to combat terrorists on the ground.” The SGF noted that Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains fully committed to security reforms, but added that international cooperation can accelerate the success of these reforms. He also acknowledged the moral and diplomatic support the current administration has received from civil society and religious organizations.
Akume called on religious organizations, traditional leaders, and the private sector to continue supporting national efforts. He stated that their prayers, cooperation, and community vigilance remain crucial to complementing government action.
This appeal comes at a time when Nigeria continues to face multiple security challenges: insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, kidnappings, and an increase in attacks against vulnerable targets across the country. By seeking the assistance of allies, the SGF signals a shift toward a more collaborative and multidimensional security strategy that combines national operations with international support and intelligence cooperation.
