The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the suspension of key tax laws in Nigeria, alleging that unauthorized changes were made outside of established legal processes.
The party’s National Secretary of Publicity stated that the ADC believes the controversial changes to tax legislation undermine the rule of law and violate taxpayers’ rights. According to the party, legal frameworks governing taxation must be transparent, inclusive, and subject to adequate legislative oversight—standards that, it claims, were not met in this case.
The ADC emphasized that tax laws must be reviewed through accepted constitutional procedures, including public consultations and legislative scrutiny. It argued that the recent changes, which have not been clearly communicated to the public, risk creating confusion among individuals and businesses required to comply with the regulations.
In a statement released Friday, the party urged the federal government and relevant authorities to suspend the implementation of the controversial provisions until a proper review is conducted. The ADC stated it is open to stakeholder participation to ensure that tax policies are fair, consistent, and aligned with national interests.
Critics of the lawsuit pointed out that the immediate suspension of the tax laws could have short-term implications for public revenues, especially at a time when the country is facing fiscal pressures. They called for a balanced approach that addresses the party’s concerns without compromising the stability of public finances.
The controversy has sparked a public debate, with some citizens advocating for clearer and more participatory legislation, while others caution against suspending crucial tax policy frameworks without clear alternatives.
The ADC stated it will continue to pursue its position, including legal action if necessary, to ensure that tax laws adhere to due process and respect fundamental rights.
