Nigerian Army Arrests Notorious Bandit Leader Along Benue-Taraba Axis

Troops from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari, under the Nigerian Army’s 6th Brigade/Operation Whirl Stroke Sector 3 (OPWS), arrested Fidelis Gayama, a known bandit leader suspected of multiple kidnappings and armed robberies in the Benue-Taraba area.

The arrest took place on December 21, 2025, during an intelligence-driven precision operation in the community of Vaase, Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State.

In a statement released on Monday, Lieutenant Muhammad Umar, spokesperson for the 6th Brigade, stated that preliminary investigations identified Gayama as a high-value suspect, long sought by security agencies. Investigators discovered he has close ties to Dogo, another wanted leader of an armed group, and is believed to head a criminal network that has terrorized travelers and communities along the Kente-Wukari Highway and the border areas between Benue and Taraba states.

Personnel from the Nigerian Police Force at the Vaase Outpost confirmed that Gayama was among those wanted by the Beji Police Division, Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State. He is currently in military custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authority for further investigation and prosecution, in accordance with applicable law.

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commanding Officer of the 6th Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3, OPWS, commended the troops for their professionalism, discipline, and operational precision, and described the arrest as a major blow to criminal networks in the region.

The Commander reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to offensive operations and the protection of lives and property. He also urged the public to continue providing timely and reliable information to security agencies to support ongoing security efforts.
