The Nigerian Army confirmed that the explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, on Tuesday night was carried out by a suicide bomber.

The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on December 24, 2025, in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council area of ​​Borno State.

According to a statement issued by Operation Hadin Kai spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, preliminary investigations indicated that the attacker was a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who detonated an improvised explosive device inside the mosque.

He stated that the attacker died instantly, along with two civilians who were caught in the blast.

Uba explained that troops from Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigerian Police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and officials from the National Emergency Management Agency, were quickly deployed to the site to secure the area and prevent further danger.

He added that the victims of the explosion were immediately evacuated to Maiduguri University Hospital and Maiduguri General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

According to the army, a total of 32 civilians suffered injuries of varying severity during the attack.

“Two of the injured later died in the hospital, while two others are currently in critical condition. The remaining victims are stable and responding to treatment,” the statement said.

The army assured residents that security has been reinforced in Maiduguri and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks, especially during the holiday period.
