British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic road accident on Monday, December 29, 2025. The crash occurred along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State. While the boxer survived with minor injuries, two other occupants of the vehicle lost their lives.

The incident took place around 11 am near the Danco Filling Station before the Sagamu Interchange. Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV as part of a two-vehicle convoy. His security team followed closely behind in a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV at the time of the crash.

Reports indicate that the Lexus collided with a stationary truck after a tire burst. This mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Eyewitnesses at the scene described the situation as chaotic as bystanders rushed to offer assistance before officials arrived.

Tragically, the impact claimed the lives of two people inside the Lexus. Authorities confirmed that the front-seat passenger and the person seated directly beside Joshua were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies have been deposited at a morgue.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and appeared dazed in video footage circulated online. First responders treated the 36-year-old on-site before moving him to a nearby hospital for further medical attention. The Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, has since confirmed that the boxer is “fine” despite the severity of the accident.

His promoter, Eddie Hearn, reacted to the news with relief regarding Joshua’s condition. Hearn stated, “I awoke to the news of this incident. Thankfully, he appears OK from what I have seen in the images.” He added that his team is awaiting more detailed information.
