Police Arrest Anthony Joshua’s Driver Over Fatal Crash

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver who drove the Lexus SUV conveying heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua during Monday’s fatal crash. The accident, which occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Danco, claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close friends. The police announced the development in a statement released on Thursday.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the driver is currently in detention to aid ongoing investigations. He stated that the authorities are working to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The ill-fated vehicle, with registration number KRD 850 HN, had collided with a stationary truck at about 11 am on Monday.

Authorities have also identified the two victims who lost their lives in the crash. They are Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, also 36, a British national. Their bodies have been prepared for repatriation following a visit by Joshua and his mother to the funeral home on Wednesday to pay their final respects.

Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun State governments have jointly announced Anthony Joshua’s discharge from the hospital. A statement signed by Kayode Akinmade and Gbenga Omotosho confirmed that doctors at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, certified the boxer clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.

Governors Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed deep gratitude to the public for the outpouring of love and prayers. They also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his fatherly support during the crisis. The governors commended the medical team for their professionalism in treating the champion and other victims.
