The United States has delivered military supplies to Nigerian security agencies to support ongoing efforts to address security challenges across the country.

The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command, which stated that U.S. forces transported critical military supplies to Nigerian partners in Abuja. According to the command, the support is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s operational capacity while reinforcing the long-standing security partnership between both countries.

The development aligns with earlier assurances by the Federal Government that the United States had expressed readiness to deepen security cooperation with Nigeria. This cooperation includes enhanced intelligence sharing, the provision of defence equipment, and other forms of support to reinforce operations against terrorist and violent extremist groups.

In November, the Federal Government dispatched a high-level delegation to Washington to strengthen bilateral security relations and explore new avenues of collaboration. The delegation was led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and engaged senior officials from the U.S. Congress, the White House Faith Office, the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of War.

Members of the delegation included the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Undiandeye, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and representatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser.

During the meetings, the Nigerian delegation rejected allegations of genocide in the country, stressing that violent attacks affect communities across religious and ethnic lines. The delegation warned that misrepresenting the security situation would only deepen divisions and distort the realities on the ground.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said the engagements helped correct misconceptions about Nigeria, strengthened mutual trust, and advanced a coordinated approach to protecting vulnerable communities, particularly in the Middle Belt. He added that both countries agreed to implement a non-binding cooperation framework and establish a Joint Working Group to ensure effective coordination in the agreed areas of cooperation.

Onanuga said the Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening civilian protection measures, while the United States expressed willingness to provide complementary support, including humanitarian assistance to affected communities and technical support to enhance early-warning mechanisms.
