Senegal claimed their second Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday after edging hosts Morocco 1-0 in extra time in a dramatic final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Midfielder Pape Gueye emerged the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the fourth minute of extra time to stun the home crowd and hand the Lions of Teranga a famous victory.

The final was marred by tense scenes following a controversial penalty award late in regulation time. Morocco were given a spot-kick deep into added time after a VAR review for a challenge on Brahim Diaz, a decision that sparked angry reactions from Senegal players and supporters.

Diaz stepped up to take the penalty but failed to convert, with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saving the weakly struck effort after a prolonged delay of nearly 20 minutes.

The penalty miss proved a turning point as Senegal regrouped and struck soon after extra time began. Sadio Mane won possession in midfield before linking up with Idrissa Gana Gueye, who released Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder powered forward and fired a superb shot past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to give Senegal the lead.

Morocco pushed for an equaliser and came close when Nayef Aguerd headed against the crossbar in the second half of extra time, but Senegal held firm to secure the win.

The hosts were left distraught after missing the chance to win the title on home soil and end a 50-year wait for a second AFCON crown.

The victory marks Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations triumph in the last three editions, following their maiden title win against Egypt in 2022.

The final also saw ugly scenes in the stands, with investigations expected into the conduct of supporters and match organisation after objects were thrown onto the pitch during the stoppage.

Despite the controversy, Senegal celebrated another historic night, confirming their status as one of Africa’s dominant football forces.
