Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), ending weeks of political speculation across the state.

The Governor’s decision was confirmed on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who presented the resignation letter on his behalf.

According to the spokesperson, the letter was addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward of Gwale Local Government Area and takes effect from January 23, 2026.

In the letter, Governor Yusuf said his decision followed deep reflection and was guided by the overriding interest of Kano State and its people.

He explained that the party has been plagued by persistent internal crises arising from leadership disagreements and prolonged legal battles, many of which are currently before the courts.

The Governor noted that the unresolved disputes have weakened party unity and created divisions that have become increasingly difficult to reconcile at both the state and national levels.

He added that the situation has led to growing disenfranchisement among party members, creating uncertainty and undermining the party’s stability.

Governor Yusuf stressed that his resignation was not driven by bitterness or personal grievances but by a commitment to peace, unity, and effective governance in Kano State.

He expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership and members for the support and goodwill extended to him since joining the party in 2022.

The Governor also acknowledged the role the party played in his political journey and electoral success.

Reports indicate that Governor Yusuf is leaving the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.

Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, said the party accepted the Governor’s decision while acknowledging the internal challenges he referenced.

Zubairu commended the Governor’s performance in office, citing achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.

Governor Yusuf has yet to officially announce his next political move, though strong speculation suggests he may join the All Progressives Congress following his recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Political analysts say the development signals a major shift in Kano State’s political landscape with possible national implications ahead of future elections.
