The Ufia Development Association (UDA), the apex sociocultural body of the Ufia people, issues this urgent Save-Our-Souls appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Benue State Government over the worsening security crisis confronting Ufia communities in Ado Local Government Area.
Under the leadership of its National President, Mr. Tony Omerigwe, and in consultation with the Ufia Traditional Council and the entire Ufia community, the Association expresses deep alarm at the frightening rise in kidnapping incidents that have now assumed an intolerable dimension. What began as sporadic criminal attacks has evolved into a sustained siege on innocent citizens, with terrorists now brazenly targeting places of worship and other vulnerable gatherings.
Within the past two weeks, armed kidnappers abducted two residents in a late-night attack. Most distressing is the recent invasion of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Ojije community, where worshippers attending a night vigil were forcefully taken away. The targeting of a church underscores the gravity of the situation and signals a dangerous escalation that threatens the social and spiritual fabric of the people.
The Ufia nation can no longer endure this climate of fear. Families live in anxiety, economic and social activities are crippled, and communities that were once known for hospitality and peaceful coexistence are now overshadowed by insecurity. This press release therefore serves as a collective cry for immediate rescue.
We call on the Federal Government, the Executive Governor of Benue State, security chiefs, and all relevant agencies to deploy decisive and sustained security measures to protect lives and restore confidence in Utonkon and adjoining communities. The Ufia people deserve to live, worship, and conduct lawful activities without fear of abduction or violence.
The Association urges swift intelligence-driven operations, increased security presence, and long-term strategies that will permanently dismantle criminal networks operating in the area. Anything short of urgent action risks further erosion of public safety.
The Ufia Development Association stands united and resolute in its demand for protection of its people. We appeal to government at all levels to treat this as a humanitarian emergency and respond with the seriousness it deserves.
Signed,
Chief Tony Omirigwe
National President
Rotr. Innocent Igelle
