President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Chairman of the United Bank for Africa, Chief Israel Ogbue, describing his death as a significant loss to Nigeria’s financial and public service landscape.

In a condolence message released on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commiserated with the family, associates, and the entire UBA community over the demise of the respected elder statesman, who died peacefully at the age of 99.

Tinubu praised Ogbue’s outstanding contributions to national development, noting that his distinguished career spanned both the public and private sectors, where he left enduring footprints of excellence, discipline, and integrity.

According to the statement, Ogbue served with distinction in the Federal Civil Service before building a remarkable career at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria and NAL Merchant Bank. His leadership qualities later earned him a seat on the board of the United Bank for Africa in 2005, where he served as a Non-Executive Director until his appointment as Chairman in 2011. He held the position until his retirement in 2013.

The President noted that throughout his tenure, Ogbue provided strategic direction and principled leadership, helping to steer the bank through a crucial period of growth and transformation. He added that the late banker’s wisdom, foresight, and dedication significantly strengthened corporate governance and long-term sustainability within the institution.

Tinubu also acknowledged Ogbue’s role as a family patriarch, describing him as a devoted father, mentor, and man of faith. He noted that the late business leader was the father of Dr Awele Elumelu, wife of UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu.

Extending condolences to the Elumelu family and the wider Ogbue family, the President also sympathised with the UBA Board, management, and staff, urging them to take solace in the impactful life and enduring legacy left behind.

He further praised Ogbue’s humility, generosity, and lifelong commitment to serving humanity, stating that the late elder dedicated his resources, wisdom, and experience to uplifting the church, the poor, the vulnerable, and his community.

Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Ogbue’s soul and asked God to grant comfort and strength to his family and loved ones in this moment of grief.

Chief Israel Ogbue passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, which also marked his 99th birthday. Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, he built a legacy that spanned more than six decades, shaping governance, finance, and institutional leadership in Nigeria.

Beyond his corporate achievements, he was widely respected as a voice of wisdom in boardroom leadership and a symbol of discipline, faith, and service whose impact will continue to resonate across generations.
