President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence in the appointment of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, describing him as the right person for the role.

The president made the remark on Monday during Oyedele’s swearing-in ceremony held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu said he had no difficulty deciding where the newly appointed minister would fit within his administration, noting that Oyedele’s dedication and professional background made him suitable for the position.

According to the president, managing fiscal policy and financial responsibility remains a demanding task, especially at a time when the country is seeking economic stability and sustainable growth.

He added that Oyedele possesses the expertise needed to contribute meaningfully to the government’s economic agenda.

Tinubu also commended the new minister for his role in advancing Nigeria’s tax reform initiatives, noting that the country’s tax policies had long required modernization.

The president further appreciated Oyedele’s family for supporting him throughout his professional journey.

Oyedele was nominated by the president on March 3, 2026, to replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who was reassigned as Minister of State for Budget and National Planning.

Following his nomination, the Nigerian Senate confirmed him after screening during a plenary session.

During the screening process, Oyedele said his years of experience in global tax and business reform across more than 180 countries had prepared him to support Nigeria’s economic transformation.

Before his ministerial appointment, Oyedele served as chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.

His leadership of the committee contributed to the development of major tax reform legislation, including the Nigeria Tax Bill and other revenue-related frameworks that were later approved by the National Assembly.

The 50-year-old policy expert previously worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he served as a fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader.

Oyedele also studied accountancy and finance at Yaba College of Technology and later earned a degree in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

In addition to his professional career, he has served as a professor at Babcock University and as a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.

Observers say his appointment reflects the administration’s effort to strengthen fiscal governance and improve Nigeria’s tax administration system.
