President Bola Tinubu has held a high-level meeting with King Charles III in the United Kingdom, marking Nigeria’s first state visit to Britain in nearly four decades.
Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, arrived in London on Tuesday for the historic engagement aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between both countries.
The meeting, which took place at Windsor Castle, focused on key areas including trade expansion, security cooperation, and major infrastructure projects.
Top on the agenda were plans for the renovation of Nigeria’s major ports, with British backing expected to support upgrades at critical maritime facilities.
The visit also highlights the strong economic relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with bilateral trade reaching billions of pounds in recent years.
As part of the official schedule, Tinubu is also expected to meet Keir Starmer to further deepen cooperation in trade, investment, and defence.
The Nigerian leader is additionally scheduled to engage members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, one of the largest abroad.
The state visit underscores renewed efforts by both nations to strengthen strategic partnerships, especially following a bilateral agreement signed in 2024 to boost economic and security collaboration.
The last time a Nigerian leader embarked on such a state visit to the UK was in 1989, making this engagement a significant diplomatic milestone.
The meeting also comes at a time of heightened security concerns in Nigeria, following recent deadly attacks in the North-East, which Tinubu has vowed to address with stronger security measures.
