The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party has intensified, as the faction led by Tanimu Turaki moves to challenge a recent court ruling at the Supreme Court.

At an emergency meeting held in Abuja, the Turaki-led National Working Committee resolved to contest the Appeal Court judgment that nullified the party’s Ibadan convention.

The meeting, which also had the backing of the party’s Board of Trustees chaired by Adolphus Wabara, reaffirmed the group’s stance to seek legal redress at the apex court.

Top party figures, including former governors Babangida Aliyu and Ibrahim Shekarau, as well as elder statesman Jerry Gana, were present at the strategic session.

The gathering comes just days before a parallel national convention planned by a rival caretaker committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, deepening uncertainty within the party.

Despite rising tensions, Turaki told party members that reconciliation efforts were ongoing and showing encouraging progress. He maintained that the PDP leadership remains determined to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The legal dispute stems from a ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which upheld an earlier decision barring the PDP from conducting its Ibadan convention without allowing Sule Lamido to participate as a chairmanship aspirant.

The appellate court described the party’s decision to proceed with the convention despite an existing court order as a clear act of disobedience, stressing that no party has the right to choose which court orders to obey.

The court further dismissed the PDP’s appeal and imposed financial penalties, reinforcing the validity of the earlier judgment.

With another convention scheduled by the rival faction in the coming days, the PDP now faces a critical test of unity, as legal battles and internal divisions continue to shape its future direction.
