The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate removal of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of bias and undermining democratic processes.
Speaking in Abuja, ADC National Chairman, David Mark, alleged that recent actions by INEC were part of a broader strategy to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The controversy follows INEC’s decision to delist key figures within the party’s leadership, a move the commission said was based on a court directive to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of an ongoing legal dispute.
However, the ADC leadership strongly rejected that interpretation, insisting that the electoral body misapplied the court order and created confusion around the party’s structure.
Mark argued that the situation reflects a growing pattern of interference that threatens political pluralism, warning that such actions could limit voters’ choices in future elections.
He further claimed that internal disputes within the party were being exploited, adding that the ADC had followed due process in restructuring its leadership and had duly notified INEC.
The party also expressed concern that the development could disrupt its preparations for upcoming elections, including scheduled congresses and conventions.
Despite the tensions, the ADC leadership affirmed its commitment to continue its activities, maintaining that no law mandates the presence of INEC for internal party operations.
The dispute highlights ongoing political friction as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with questions emerging over the role of electoral institutions in managing internal party conflicts.
