At least 17 people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident occurred on Easter Sunday, when suspected armed attackers stormed the community, opening fire on residents and setting several homes ablaze.

Local sources said many persons remain unaccounted for, as search and rescue efforts contiburnt housenue in the aftermath of the attack.

Witnesses reported that the assailants arrived in large numbers, causing panic as families fled their homes to escape the violence.

The attack has left widespread destruction, with numerous houses burnt and residents displaced, while properties worth millions of naira were reportedly lost.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to issue a detailed official statement. However, security agencies are expected to intensify operations to restore calm and apprehend those responsible.

The incident has further heightened concerns over recurring violence in Benue and the wider North-Central region, with renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
