At least 18 people have lost their lives following a deadly attack by armed bandits on a rural community in Zamfara State, deepening concerns over insecurity in the region.

Residents said the attackers, who reportedly arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, invaded Bunkasau village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area late Friday night, firing shots and causing panic among villagers.

Local sources explained that the assault lasted for some time, forcing many residents to flee, while others were caught in the violence.

The state government confirmed the incident, with the Commissioner for Information noting that several people were also injured during the attack.

Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Dauda Lawal described the killings as senseless and deeply disturbing. He extended condolences to families of the victims and ordered immediate intervention to support affected communities.

A delegation led by the deputy governor has been directed to visit the area, assess the situation, and ensure that those injured receive urgent medical attention.

The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks reported in the area in recent weeks. Just days earlier, another community in the same local government area experienced a similar invasion, which resulted in abductions and widespread displacement.

Security operatives have since intensified efforts to counter the activities of armed groups in the state. In a recent operation, joint forces reportedly engaged suspected bandits in a gun battle, leading to significant casualties among the attackers.
