The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party has deepened, with the party’s Board of Trustees announcing a 13-member interim National Working Committee.
The committee was constituted by the BoT led by Adolphus Wabara, who said the decision followed a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the party’s Ibadan convention and created a leadership vacuum.
According to Wabara, the move aligns with the party’s constitution, which mandates the formation of a caretaker structure when leadership gaps arise.
The newly appointed interim committee is headed by former National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki.
The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee meeting convened by the Turaki-led bloc at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
Prominent stakeholders present at the meeting included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former PDP National Chairman Babangida Muazu, and elder statesman Jerry Gana, among others.
The group also declared the Abuja convention that produced the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee as invalid.
The latest development comes days after the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by the Turaki-led leadership, ruling that the Ibadan convention violated an existing Federal High Court order.
Delivering the judgment, the apex court held that the convention was conducted in defiance of due process, thereby rendering its outcomes null.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims of factional divisions within the party.
“The Supreme Court judgment has now made it clear that there is only one PDP. Faction does not exist anymore,” Wike said.
He maintained that the Abuja convention, which produced Abdulrahman Mohammed and other members of the National Working Committee, remains valid.
Despite these claims, the emergence of a parallel interim leadership structure signals ongoing internal divisions that could shape the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
