A fatal accident at Issele-Uku junction on the Asaba-Benin Highway has left 17 people dead after a heavy-duty truck carrying ceramic products collided with a commercial bus traveling from Lagos to southeastern Nigeria.

Eyewitnesses reported that the commercial bus, registered Benue: UKM 157 XA, attempted to overtake the truck from the right side—a dangerous move that led to a catastrophic crash. The impact forced the bus off the road, killing at least 17 passengers, including children.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Issele-Uku Commander, Benjamin Ojiefo, attributed the tragedy to improper overtaking. “This could have been avoided if the driver had followed the basic rule of overtaking from the left,” Ojiefo stated.

Rescue teams have transported one bus passenger and two truck occupants to the hospital in critical condition. Emergency crews continue search-and-rescue operations, fearing the worst for the remaining passengers.
