Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), has joined 14 other higher institutions and agricultural research and training organisations in Nigeria to integrate innovative agricultural training into their curricula, training programmes and extension services.

The development marks a significant step towards strengthening agricultural education, promoting sustainable farming practices and bridging the gap between academic knowledge, agricultural research and practical farming.

The initiative is being implemented by the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) Nigeria through the Strengthening Institutional Frameworks for Transformative Agricultural Systems in Nigeria (SIFTAS) project. The project is funded by the German development agency GIZ through its Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Policies (AgSys) programme.

Four Key Agricultural Innovation Areas

The SIFTAS Innovation Bundle comprises four major components designed to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen rural enterprises and promote sustainable agricultural development.

These include:

  • Crop-Specific Agroforestry: Integrating trees with crop production to support environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
  • Farmer Field Business School and Sustainable Rice Production: Equipping farmers with practical production techniques and business management skills.
  • Contract Farming: Strengthening relationships between farmers and buyers to improve market access and commercial opportunities.
  • Cooperative Business School: Promoting effective cooperative management, collective enterprise development and improved business practices among farmers.

The programme also introduces opportunities for farmers to benefit from carbon markets through carbon sequestration, an approach that can support climate change mitigation while creating potential additional income opportunities.

JOSTUM Strengthens Commitment to Agricultural Innovation

JOSTUM’s participation reinforces the university’s commitment to advancing agricultural education, applied research and sustainable development.

By incorporating the innovation package into its academic curricula, training programmes and extension systems, the institution aims to strengthen the practical and entrepreneurial competencies of agricultural graduates.

The initiative is expected to support the development of graduates who can apply their knowledge to real-world agricultural challenges, promote improved farming practices and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The university’s involvement also highlights the importance of partnerships between higher institutions, agricultural research organisations, development agencies and farming communities in advancing agricultural transformation.

SIFTAS Targets Sustainable Agricultural Development

Through the SIFTAS project, the Sasakawa Africa Association and its partners are promoting institutional approaches that connect agricultural education with the needs of farmers and agribusinesses.

The initiative focuses on practical training, climate resilience, farm business management, market linkages and sustainable cooperative enterprises.

Integrating these approaches into institutional teaching and extension systems could help strengthen the connection between research findings and their application in farming communities.

For Nigeria, where agriculture remains an important source of livelihoods and economic activity, improving agricultural education and practical skills development is essential to building a more productive and resilient agricultural sector.

A Step Towards the Future of Agricultural Education

JOSTUM’s adoption of the SIFTAS Innovation Bundle represents an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between classroom learning, research and agricultural enterprise development.

As the university integrates these approaches into its programmes, effective implementation, practical training and engagement with farming communities will be important in translating the initiative into measurable outcomes.
