Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has admitted that head coach Gian Piero Gasperini made an emotional error in publicly criticizing Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman. However, he reassured fans of Gasperini’s commitment and coaching excellence.

The controversy erupted after Gasperini slammed Lookman for missing a crucial penalty against Club Brugge in the Champions League, labeling him “one of the worst” penalty-takers. His harsh remarks ignited debates among football analysts and fans.

Speaking with Gazzetta dello Sport, Pagliuca attempted to calm tensions, stressing the club’s collective approach to setbacks.

“We’ve moved on from this situation, especially after our 5-0 win against Empoli,” he said, as quoted by Football Italia.

Acknowledging the coach’s misstep, he added, “Gasperini is an incredibly passionate coach, but he made a mistake in singling out a player. At Atalanta, we take responsibility as a team. If things go wrong, we look at ourselves and find ways to improve.”
