Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has stressed the importance of smarter recruitment to help the club recover from its ongoing struggles.

The Portuguese coach, who took charge in November, has been unable to stop United’s downward spiral, with the team currently languishing in 15th place in the Premier League. Despite the club splurging over £600 million on signings under former boss Erik ten Hag, results have failed to improve.

Amorim had little financial backing in the January transfer window, with Danish defender Patrick Dorgu being his only signing, as Old Trafford tightened its budget. Adding to the club’s woes, United recently announced up to 200 job cuts as part of a “transformation plan” to stabilize operations.

Speaking to the press, Amorim acknowledged the impact of poor decision-making in recruitment.

“The truth is, we need to improve. Recruitment is crucial. We must build a stronger team and get back to playing in Europe instead of where we are now,” he stated.

The manager also admitted that words alone won’t convince fans and staff but emphasized that the club must avoid costly mistakes in the transfer market.

“We have an idea of what to do, but actions will speak louder than words. As a coach, I believe we need to be a better team and make fewer mistakes when signing players.”

United’s recent struggles in the market are evident, with high-profile signings like Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to deliver consistent results. Højlund, who cost £100 million, has only netted twice in the Premier League this season, with his last goal coming on December 12.

However, Amorim defended the Danish striker, insisting that the team’s lack of creativity is to blame.

“As a team, we are not helping Rasmus. We don’t create enough chances for him. He has the potential, but we need to improve our overall play to get the best out of him,” Amorim explained.

With pressure mounting, the focus now shifts to United’s recruitment strategy in upcoming transfer windows, as the club aims to rebuild and return to the top.
