Electricity Tariff Hike Looms: FG Weighs New Rates for Non-Band-A Customers

The Federal Government is considering an electricity tariff hike for customers outside the Band-A category as part of efforts to improve liquidity in Nigeria’s power sector.

The proposed adjustment aims to narrow the gap between other customer categories and Band-A users, who currently pay N206/kW and make up about two million consumers.

Speaking at the public presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and Nigeria Integrated Resource Plan (NIRP) in Abuja, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, stressed that the government could no longer sustain the N3 trillion subsidy on electricity.

He noted that power generation and distribution have increased by about 35% in 2024, making financial sustainability crucial for further improvements in the sector.
