Senator Ireti Kingibe has dismissed claims made by her colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, regarding the Senate’s seating reassignment, stating that Natasha does not adhere to parliamentary rules.
The controversy erupted when Senate President Godswill Akpabio reassigned Natasha’s seat, prompting her to protest during plenary. Refusing to move, she was later denied recognition when she attempted to speak, leading to further tensions. The Senate eventually voted to refer her to the Ethics Committee for disciplinary review.
During an interview on Arise TV, Natasha accused Akpabio of attempting to frustrate her legislative duties and even alleged that he had sexually harassed her on two occasions.
However, in a separate interview, Kingibe refuted Natasha’s claims, calling the entire issue unnecessary. She revealed that other lawmakers, including men, had their seats moved as well but did not make a fuss.
“The Senate is not a place for trivial fights over seating arrangements,” Kingibe stated, adding that the three other female senators chose to remain silent on the matter to avoid publicly criticizing Natasha.
While acknowledging that the Senate has historically not been gender-friendly, she noted that improvements have been made. She urged women in politics to follow institutional rules, emphasizing that fairness applies to all members.
As the controversy unfolds, all eyes remain on the Senate’s next steps regarding Natasha’s disciplinary review.
