The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has raised alarm over the Supreme Court’s decision to halt Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements to Rivers State, warning that the ruling could have dire consequences for the state’s economy, citizens, and peace efforts in the Niger Delta.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, PANDEF described the decision as unjust, arguing that Rivers State—one of Nigeria’s top oil-producing regions—should not be subjected to financial strangulation over a political dispute that is “eminently resolvable.”
The group urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling, emphasizing that governance and economic development should not be held hostage by political rivalries. PANDEF also called on the Federal Government, political stakeholders, and the judiciary to act in the interest of fairness and national stability.
The forum warned that the situation mirrors the controversial withholding of local government funds from Lagos State during former Governor Bola Tinubu’s tenure—a move that was widely condemned and set a dangerous precedent. PANDEF cautioned that if the Rivers State crisis is not swiftly resolved, it could escalate tensions in the Niger Delta, threatening regional peace and security.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice and sustainable development, PANDEF urged all parties involved to prioritize the welfare of Rivers State residents and work toward a fair resolution.
