Carl Dean, the longtime husband of country music legend Dolly Parton, has passed away at the age of 82. The beloved couple shared nearly 60 years of marriage, keeping their love story mostly away from the spotlight despite Parton’s global fame.

Announcing the heartbreaking news on social media, Parton wrote, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.”

Dean and Parton first met in 1964 outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee, on the very day she arrived in the city to chase her music dreams. She was 18, and he was 21.

“I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me),” Parton once recalled, known for her signature beauty and towering hairstyles.

Two years later, in 1966, they tied the knot in a private ceremony attended only by Parton’s mother, a preacher, and the preacher’s wife. Their love remained a quiet force in Parton’s life, with Dean famously shunning the spotlight as she rose to become the “Queen of Country Music.”

Dean, a Nashville native, worked as an asphalt paver while his wife’s career soared. Despite Parton’s glitzy stage presence, the couple enjoyed a simple, private life together.

“We like to get out in our little RV and just be simple,” Parton shared in a 2015 interview. “I love to read, I love to cook, I love to be with my husband.”
