Four years after Diego Maradona’s tragic passing, the trial of seven medical professionals accused of negligence in his final days is set to begin in Argentina.
The trial, scheduled to last four months, kicks off next Tuesday in San Isidro, Buenos Aires. Over 100 witnesses, including Maradona’s family and former doctors, will testify in a case that could see the accused facing prison sentences of up to 25 years.
The Case Against Maradona’s Medical Team
Maradona, who passed away on November 25, 2020, at age 60, was recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Prosecutors allege his medical team failed to provide adequate care, effectively leaving him to die in prolonged agony.
A 2021 expert medical panel concluded that the football legend’s life could have been saved with proper treatment in a hospital setting. Evidence, including leaked messages, reportedly shows attempts to prevent Maradona’s daughters from intervening in his care.
Who’s on Trial?
The accused include Maradona’s neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, medical coordinator, two nurses, and a doctor. One nurse, Gisela Dahiana Madrid, has requested a separate jury trial in July.
A Nation Still Mourning
Maradona’s death shook Argentina, leading to a period of deep national mourning. His legacy, however, lives on in murals, statues, and soon, a dedicated mausoleum in Buenos Aires—a final resting place where fans can pay tribute to the legend who changed football forever.
As the trial unfolds, the world watches to see whether justice will be served for one of football’s greatest icons.
