Sokoto on High Alert as Meningitis Cases Surge—Health Officials Urge Caution

Sokoto State health authorities have sounded the alarm over a growing outbreak of meningitis, urging residents to stay vigilant and take preventive measures.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that laboratory tests have verified multiple meningitis cases in several local government areas. In response, the state government has intensified disease surveillance, case management, and public health interventions to contain the outbreak.

Dr. Abubakar advised residents to be proactive in protecting themselves, stressing the importance of personal hygiene, avoiding crowded spaces, and ensuring proper ventilation in homes and public areas.

“If you experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, or any unusual signs, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility,” he warned.

The commissioner also urged citizens to promptly report suspected cases to hospitals to prevent further spread.

Meanwhile, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has ensured that all state health facilities are stocked with necessary medications to tackle the outbreak. Authorities are calling on the public to cooperate in fighting the disease before it escalates further.
