Education has always been a driving force for former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, and now, it’s a family legacy. In an emotional moment at his country home in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area, Dickson celebrated his younger brother, Dr. Moses Oruaze Dickson, for achieving a historic milestone—becoming the first PhD holder in their family.
Receiving the doctoral certificate, the lawmaker described education as the best tool for human development and a powerful weapon against poverty. He recalled how, during his eight-year tenure as governor, he prioritized educational policies to transform the sector and uplift young minds.
“Today, I am overjoyed that my younger brother, who I see as my first son, has officially presented his PhD to me. This is not just historic; it is deeply personal and emotional,” Dickson expressed.
Acknowledging their humble beginnings, he emphasized how he has always encouraged and supported his siblings to aim high academically. “For me, this moment is significant. He has achieved something our late father would have loved to do but couldn’t. In a way, he has done it for both of us,” he added.
As the founder of Hensard University, a private institution in Bayelsa, Dickson charged his brother to push further in academia and legal practice, urging him to aspire for greater heights—whether as a professor or a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Responding, Dr. Moses Dickson revealed he completed his PhD at the University of Bradford, UK, last year but chose to wait for the perfect moment to present his certificate to his brother. He credited his success to the unwavering support he received from his elder brother, who stood by him through his academic journey, from his first law degree at Niger Delta University to earning three master’s degrees and now a PhD.
A proud family, a celebrated achievement, and an inspiring story of perseverance—this moment stands as a testament to the power of education and unwavering family support.
