The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has assured suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, that it will take necessary action after listening to both sides of the controversy surrounding her suspension from the Nigerian Senate.
IPU President, Tulia Ackson, made this statement in response to Natasha’s passionate appeal at the Women in Parliament session during an IPU meeting. The senator had called on international democratic institutions, including the United Nations (UN), to intervene in what she described as political victimization and suppression of women in leadership.
Natasha’s Emotional Plea
Speaking at the session, Natasha recounted her ordeal with a heavy heart:
“I am not here to bring shame to my country, but to seek justice for Nigerian women. On March 6, 2025, I was illegally suspended after submitting a sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Instead of a fair investigation, I was silenced, my security was withdrawn, my salary cut off, and I was banned from appearing near the National Assembly for six months.”
She described her suspension as an attack on democracy, stating that it was not just about her but a broader effort to exclude women from leadership in Nigeria.
“If a female senator can be treated this way, imagine the struggles of ordinary Nigerian women in workplaces and universities,” she added.
IPU’s Response: A Fair Process
Reacting to Natasha’s claims, IPU President Ackson acknowledged her concerns but emphasized that the organization would also listen to the other side before taking any action.
“We have heard her concerns, and as a democratic institution, we will also listen to the other side before making any decisions,” Ackson stated.
She reassured the assembly that IPU would ensure a fair process and take necessary steps based on all perspectives.
What Next?
With the IPU now involved, Natasha’s suspension has taken on an international dimension, putting pressure on the Nigerian Senate to justify its decision. The coming weeks will determine whether the case sparks a broader debate on gender, justice, and democracy in Nigeria.
