Tensions are boiling in Kaduna as members of the State House of Assembly have threatened to sue former Governor Nasir El-Rufai for allegedly referring to them as “stark illiterates” during a radio interview.
Reacting to El-Rufai’s statement, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Henry Marah Zachariah, dismissed the former governor’s comments as a desperate attempt to remain politically relevant.
“All the honorable members of the Assembly met the constitutional requirements to contest and win their elections,” Zachariah stated. “Our legal, educational, and moral qualifications are not in question, and we have fulfilled our constitutional duty to investigate his administration.”
El-Rufai had reportedly claimed that the lawmakers lacked the capacity to probe his tenure, but the Assembly insists that the findings of its investigative committee are valid and publicly available.
“The former governor’s attempts to challenge the report in court have failed. Until he successfully overturns it, he remains indicted,” Zachariah added.
Lawmakers are now preparing to take legal action to defend their integrity and that of the Assembly.
“We will not allow baseless insults to undermine the credibility of the House. Legal steps will be taken to protect our image and that of the institution,” he affirmed.
Despite the controversy, the legislators reiterated their commitment to supporting Governor Uba Sani and House Speaker Yusuf Liman in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Kaduna.
