A devastating rainstorm struck Mayigi Community Comprehensive High School in Ilase, located in Ogun State’s Ipokia Local Government Area, on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and claiming the life of a 14-year-old student. The victim, Timothy Amosun, a Junior Secondary School Three pupil, was tragically killed when the storm ravaged the school’s classrooms.
The catastrophe didn’t end with the loss of young Timothy’s life. In addition to the heartbreaking fatality, five other students, two teachers, a food vendor, and her seven-month-old child sustained injuries. The local community and families are left reeling from this traumatic event.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, expressed his deep sorrow in a statement, calling the event both shocking and heartbreaking. The Governor offered his condolences to the bereaved family, acknowledging the profound loss and promising full support for the medical treatment of the injured.
In his statement, Governor Abiodun revealed that the state government would cover all medical expenses for the injured and has directed emergency services to transfer the critically hurt victims to specialized hospitals both within and outside the state for advanced care.
“The incident has shaken us all,” the Governor said. “We are focused on providing the victims with the best possible care and ensuring the necessary steps are taken to rebuild the school.” He also mentioned that the Commissioner for Education would visit the families of the victims and assess the damage at the school.
This tragic event highlights the growing concern about weather-related disasters in the region and the need for stronger infrastructure to withstand such natural calamities.
