Tinubu Meets South-South Monarchs Amid Rivers Political Tension

ABUJA – President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a crucial meeting with the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, alongside other traditional rulers at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The visit comes at a time of heightened political tension in the South-South region, following President Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

As part of the emergency measures, Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the State House of Assembly were suspended for an initial period of six months. In their place, the President appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, as the sole administrator of the state.

The meeting with South-South royal fathers is seen as a strategic move by the Presidency to engage key stakeholders and possibly ease tensions in the region.

Obi Azinge, the 14th Asagba of Asaba, was crowned on August 26, 2024, and has been an influential figure in the region’s traditional leadership.

Details of the meeting are still emerging, but its timing suggests high-level discussions on governance and stability in Rivers and the wider South-South region.
